President Habib was expelled for beating up a Freedom Fighter, and cutting trees
Disgruntled leaders of the Chhatra League in Bogra's Sariakandi have demanded Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's intervention for immediate cancellation or revision of the newly-formed upazila committee to remove some controversial members.
Some of the new leaders, including five organizing secretaries, were never a member of the ruling party's student wing, others were expelled for misconduct or are married.
The matter has created much hype since the announcement of the partial committee on June 27 in a press release signed by district unit Chhatra League President Sajib Saha and General Secretary Al Mahidul Islam Joy.
President of Phulbari Union Awami League Habibur Rahman Habib has been given the responsibility of the upazila unit president while Palash Ahmed made the general secretary.
Habib was expelled from the party for beating up Freedom Fighter Montezar Rahman, cutting trees and breaking the party discipline. On the other hand, Palash Ahmed was relieved from the Sariakandi College committee due to a breach of the party.
Vice President Mahfuzar Rahman, Joint General Secretary Ibn Sina Shraban, and five of the organizing secretaries – Ashraful Islam Sagar, Rafiul Islam Rafi, Asif Islam, Zahid Hasan Rezvi and Rocky Islam Anik -- were not members of any unit of the Upazila Chhatra League. Of them, Sagar, Rafi and Asif are residents of the same union.
On the other hand, Organizational Secretary Abu Raihan is married.
In protest against the committee, the deposed leaders held a protest march at the Sarikandi Press Club on Wednesday afternoon.
Regarding the allegations, district unit BCL President Sajib Saha said that the committee was formed after discussing with the leaders of the Sariakandi Upazila Awami League.
“The agitators are breaking the party order by staging protests without giving any written complaint. However, we will take action after an investigation,” he added.
