Top Bahadur Raymajhi, a CPN-UML secretary was arrested on Sunday night at 9 PM in Budhanilkantha in connection with the fake refugee scam and is being presented infront of court today for the extension of the deadline.
On May 3, Kathmandu District Court had issued an arrest warrant against Rayamajhi, who is accused as accomplice in a racket in which hundreds of Nepalese were swindled of Rs 500,000 to Rs five million with the promise of sending and resettling them to third countries like the US in the guise of Bhutanese refugees. He had been absconding from police.
Rayamajhi, who was also former Deputy Prime Minister, energy minister, and secretary of the main opposition CPN-UML was arrested on the 11th day after issuing of his arrest warrant. He had been on his run since 4 May and also had fled to India as reported. He was arrested right after he arrived.
According to Senior Superintendent Dan Bahadur Karki, chief of the District Police Range Kathmandu, Rayamajhi was arrested from Pasikot in Budhanilkantha on the northern rim of Kathmandu. His son, Sandeep Rayamajhi has already been arrested for his involvement in the scam.
