NHRC urges all to remain calm, calls for strengthening law and order

SATV Kathmandu Oct 10: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has urged all sides to exercise restraint and help maintain peace and social harmony amid the evolving political situation in the country.

In a press statement issued on Wednesday, the commission expressed concern over recent political developments and the planned demonstrations by youth groups, warning that provocative remarks and hate speech could disturb social harmony and undermine the rule of law.

The NHRC said it is closely monitoring the situation while expediting its investigation into human rights violations during the violent incidents and arson that occurred on September 8 and 9 (Bhadra 23 and 24).

"Violent activities and hate speech directed at others not only disrupt social cohesion but also cloud the political environment, posing a threat to peace, security, and the rule of law," the statement said.

The commission called on the government to take necessary and measured steps to strengthen peace and security by boosting the morale of security agencies and upholding the rule of law.

Likewise, the NHRC urged political parties and groups to ensure their upcoming protests remain peaceful and disciplined, refrain from hate-motivated expressions, and engage constructively in a democratic and transparent political process based on public mandate.

The commission also appealed to civil society, media professionals, and the human rights community to support efforts to maintain peace, harmony, and lawful conduct in the country.
