SATV 30 May, Kathmandu: The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has signed annual revenue contracts worth Rs. 60 million for the collection and sale of dry waste generated alongside household garbage. To implement this initiative efficiently, the city has been divided into seven zones, with each zone awarded a contract through a separate competitive bidding process.
According to engineer Ram Prasad Nepal, the Material Recovery Facility (MRF) in Zone 7 is already operational and preparations are under way to bring similar facilities into operation in remaining zones.
In Zone 7, a total of 101,355 kg of dry waste was collected during the Nepali month of Baisakh (mid-April to mid-May). This zone includes Ward Nos. 12, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25 and 27. The dry waste is collected through the MRF. The highest single-day collection for the month was 3,827 kg, while the lowest was 2,534 kg.
In the Nepali month of Chaitra, the metropolitan city began collecting garbage through MRF Waste collection in this area began on March 24, with 1,377 kg collected on the first day. The highest collection in Chaitra was 4,500 kg and the monthly total was 60,660 kg. Glorious Multipurpose and Supplies was awarded the annual contract for this zone at Rs. 6.2 million.
To manage household waste disposal effectively, KMC has divided 32 wards into seven zones. Each zone has one waste transfer centre and an MRF. The contracts were awarded in accordance with the Revenue Contract Procedure 2022, following a public notice.
Nepsemac Services Pvt. Ltd. won the contract for Zone 1, which includes Ward Nos. 2, 3, 4, 5 and 7, at Rs. 6.6 million annually. Practical Waste Solutions Pvt. Ltd. secured Zone 2, comprising Ward Nos. 1, 11, 28, 29 and 30, with a contract value of Rs. 5.5 million annually, while Creative Cleanliness Pvt. Ltd. took Zone 3, covering Wards 6, 8 and 9, for Rs. 5.4 million annually.
Mechi Poly Industries was awarded the contract for Zone 4 (Ward Nos. 16, 17, 26), Nepal Urja Development Company for Zone 5 (Ward Nos. 13, 14, 15) and Poly Waste Management for Zone 6 (Ward Nos. 10, 31, 32).
The estimated daily dry waste generation is 48 tonnes in Zone 1; 36.5 tonnes in Zone 2; 38 tonnes in Zone 3; 55.5 tonnes in Zone 4; 49 tonnes in Zone 5; and 54 tonnes in Zone 6.
Engineer Nepal confirmed that all quoted contract amounts are exclusive of taxes.
