SATV 2 May, Kathmandu: Residents of Chhekampar in Chumnubri Rural Municipality-7 have started heading to the highlands of Chheke and Baju to harvest Yarsagumba, a valuable medicinal herb. The annual migration, which began in the third week of April, sees families leaving their homes for over two months to collect the fungus, with supplies and clothing transported by yaks.

According to local resident Chhiring Phunjo Lama, adverse weather has made travel difficult this season. Despite the challenges, Yarsagumba collection remains a vital source of income, with individuals earning between Rs 200,000 and Rs 400,000 each season.

Former local representative Pasang Phunjo Lama said most village homes remain locked during this period as entire families move to the highlands, setting up temporary camps. Those unable to make the journey stay behind, cared for by visitors from the lower Rongba region.

Collectors must pay Rs 500 each to both a community committee and the local government for harvesting permits. However, concerns have grown over the declining availability of Yarsagumba in recent years, with fears it may soon become extinct in the region.
