SATV Dec 30,Pokhara: The second Dragon Boat Festival, aimed at promoting Nepal’s tourism and strengthening Nepal-China friendship, concluded today with thrilling races in the 200-meter and 500-meter categories. Eight teams, shortlisted from earlier rounds, competed fiercely on the final day.
In the 200-meter race, Tongkuan Laoyu Club secured first place, completing the race in just 47 seconds. Yunnan Minzu University and Liaocheng University teams finished second and third, respectively. The 500-meter race also saw Tongkuan Laoyu Club dominate, clocking 2 minutes and 4 seconds, followed by Liaocheng University and Wuhan Sports University in second and third places.
A prize distribution ceremony followed the competition, graced by notable figures including Gandaki Province Chief Minister Surendra Raj Pandey, Chinese Ambassador to Nepal Chen Song, Pokhara Mayor Dhanraj Acharya, and representatives from the Nepal and Chinese Dragon Boat Associations.
Mayor Acharya lauded the festival as a symbol of Pokhara's growing reputation as a hub for sports tourism. He expressed gratitude to the Chinese delegation and emphasized Pokhara’s commitment to hosting similar events in the future, strengthening its ties with China. Highlighting the participation of young athletes, he announced plans to organize inter-school and university dragon boat races in Nepal to nurture local talent.
Chief Minister Pandey emphasized Pokhara's emergence as a sports capital alongside its tourism identity. He underscored the cultural and economic significance of such events, which not only promote tourism but also deepen bilateral relations with China.
Chinese Ambassador Chen Song praised the festival's success, recalling its growth since the inaugural event last year. He expressed optimism for even larger events in the future and reiterated China’s commitment to supporting Nepal’s development.
The final rounds saw participation from elite teams, including Wuhan University, Hubei University of Economics, Yunnan Normal University, and Sichuan Luozhou Dragon Boat teams. Over 100 athletes and officials arrived in Pokhara via Sichuan Airlines for the event.
The winners received $5,000, while second and third-place teams were awarded $2,000 and $1,200, respectively. Other teams received consolation prizes of $500 each. The festival not only highlighted the spirit of sportsmanship but also infused energy into Pokhara’s tourism industry.
As Nepal gears up for Visit Nepal Year 2025, the festival is expected to play a crucial role in drawing global attention to Pokhara, further strengthening Nepal-China ties and showcasing Nepal’s potential as a premier tourism destination.
