The production of Yam has been increased this year but the trade is in decreasing order. The main reason for decrease in trade is the competition in the local market.

As Maghe Sankranti is in the head, many merchants are attracted to the business of Yam that divides market and resulting to lower the price.

Yam's trade has decreased during Maghi, a festival celebrated by Hindus. In Maghi, Simal, Scus root, Forest yam, Indian yam, Elephant yam, Red yam, Water yam, Taro root, Sakharkhand etc are traded more. Traders say that although there is more business especially on Maghe Sankrantithan on Ekadishi and other festivals, the business of yam has decreased this year.

“The sales of vegetables have been decreased in comparision to previous year becausethe vegetables have been exported to different market locations directly from terai. There are numerous numbers of markets in many places” says Roshan Shah, a trader from Birjung.

Rabin Shrestha, other farmer from kalimati said that this year Yam's trade is not like before. The production was less previous year and high this year but consumers are less this year.

The price of Yam is Rs 60 per kg and Rs 50 per kg in kalimati to individual consumers and traders who buys sacks of Yam. The Yaam has been imported from both inside the country and India as well but due to less consumerism, the sales are also in decreasing order. Local production of Dhading, Nuwakot, Chitwan is also very high but still the sales are low.

‘‘My rental cost of Kalimati stall is one lakh thirty five thousand and we must pay it may we suffer any loss or profit. Farmers should invest high for productionbut we are not getting good rates at market while selling. We need to feed lotsof middle man and also spend for other necessities like plastic bags. But Government has done nothing to ease our pain or help us around’’ said Rabin Shrestha, a farmer.

He further adds, ‘‘We sold around 8-10 acresproduct previous year but we ain't being able to sell even 6 acres productsthis year. I sold it in around Rs 7000 per quintal while we are selling only atRs 4500 to Rs 5000 per quintal depending upon the costumers capacity, eventhough our products are all organic and pure Nepalese.’’
