SATV Kathmandu Sept 08: Tensions flared in New Baneshwor on Monday as police fired rubber bullets and aerial shots to control escalating protests by Gen Z demonstrators. The clashes erupted after protesters, opposing corruption and the government's ban on social media, forced their way into the Federal Parliament premises and began pelting stones.
Despite repeated rounds of tear gas and water cannons, protesters refused to back down, prompting police to fire rubber bullets. According to police, aerial firing was carried out after the situation went out of control. Police later cleared those who had entered inside the Parliament building.
The Kathmandu District Administration Office has already imposed a curfew from 12:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. in New Baneshwor and surrounding areas. The order, confirmed by Chief District Officer Chhabi Rijal, covers routes extending west to Bijuli Bazaar bridge, east to Tinkune Chowk, north to Ratna Rajya School, and south to Shankhamul bridge.
The protests, led by the Gen Z generation, were initially announced as peaceful but turned confrontational once demonstrators broke police barricades and stormed restricted zones. Authorities have described the situation in Baneshwor as "highly tense."
Beyond Kathmandu, Gen Z youths also staged protests in Biratnagar, Butwal, Chitwan, Pokhara, and other cities against corruption and the social media shutdown.
