Inflation down to 4.2% from 6.8% last year

By A Staff Reporter,Kathmandu, July 11: The inflation rate has moderated to 4.17 per cent by mid-June 2024 compared to 6.83 per cent a year ago. 

According to current macroeconomic and financial report made public by the Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) Wednesday, the inflation of food and beverage category stood at 5.76 per cent whereas non-food and service category inflation stood at 2.94 per cent in the review period.

Under the Food and Beverage Category, y-o-y price index of vegetable subcategory increased by 16.02 per cent, pulses and legumes by 11.76 per cent, cereal grains and their products by 7.32 per cent, sugar and sugar products by 6.98 per cent and non-alcoholic drinks by 5.95 per cent in the review months. 

However, the y-o-y price index of ghee and oil sub-category decreased by 5.51 per cent in the review months.

Under the Non-Food and Services Category, y-o-y price index of miscellaneous goods and services sub-category increased by 12.47 per cent, education by 5.64 per cent and clothes and footwear by 3.46 per cent in the review months. 

The y-o-y price index of communication sub-category decreased by 0.48 per cent and transportation by 0.18 per cent in the review months.

The y-o-y consumer price inflation in the Kathmandu Valley, Tarai, Hill and Mountain region stood at 4.25 per cent, 3.82 per cent, 4.63 per cent and 4.77 per cent respectively in the review months, said the report.

The y-o-y wholesale price inflation stood at 5.48 per cent in mid-June 2024 compared to 3.10 per cent a year ago. 

The y-o-y wholesale price index of consumption goods, intermediate goods and capital goods increased by 6.87 per cent, 5.32 per cent and 1.66 per cent respectively. 

However, the y-o-y wholesale price index of construction materials decreased by 2.12 per cent in the review months.

The y-o-y salary and wage rate index increased by 2.84 per cent in mid-June 2024 compared to 10.14 per cent a year ago. 

The y-o-y salary index and wage rate index increased by 1.05 and 3.36 per cent respectively in the review months.
