Main opposition MDP’s parliamentary group, on Tuesday, has refuted allegations that the free degree scheme initiated by the party’s former administration is a scam; describing the program as one that is crucially linked to the future of the nation’s youth.

Main ruling PNC’s parliamentary group senior deputy leader, Baarah MP Ibrahim Shujau called MDP’s former administration’s free degree scheme offering all Maldivian citizens free enrollment in for first bachelor’s degree programs “a huge scam" during Tuesday's parliamentary sitting. He also said the parliament must investigate “the crimes the MDP administration committed in the name of investing in higher education.”

MDP’s Kendhoo MP Mauroof Zakir refuted Shujau’s claim during a parliamentary group press conference held on Tuesday.

In this regard, Mauroof stressed that the free degree scheme involved no scams. He made an appeal to continue the program without interruption, citing it was the wishes of MDP.

“We strongly urge the continuance of the free degree scheme in its true meaning. This is a very important thing, as it is linked to the future of many youths,” he said.

The free degree scheme was introduced by former president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

Over 10,000 students enrolled in various courses under the free degree scheme are still completing their education at present.
