Nepali films struggle despite multiple releases

SATV, Kathmandu, Jun. 17 - Although half a dozen Nepali films were released during the month of Jesth, none managed to achieve notable box-office success.

While the number of Nepali film releases was relatively high, revenue figures remained modest.

The films released during the month were Ek Mutthi Badal,’ Life Damage,’ ‘Kaji,’ ‘Mitjyu,’ ‘Roll No. 1’ and ‘Kumbh.’

According to a box-office report issued by the Film Development Board, total box-office earnings for Jesth amounted to only Rs. 35.59 million. A total of 122,380 cinemagoers visited theatres to watch the six films released during the month.

Among the six releases, ‘Roll No. 1’ emerged as the strongest commercial performer.

According to the report published by the Film Development Board up to midnight last Sunday, the film earned a gross box-office collection of Rs. 13.51 million. A total of 47,151 people watched the film in cinemas.

Starring Mukun Bhusal, Sushank Karki, Renu Nath Yogi and Sirjana Adhikari, the film was produced by Binod Poudel and directed by John Yonjan. 

It explores themes of education, family relationships, the challenges of student life and social realities with an emotional depth.

The star-studded ‘Mitjyu’ also failed to perform as expected. Released on  May 22, the film attracted 46,154 paying viewers and generated a gross collection of Rs. 13.25 million. The cast includes Dayahang Rai, Saugat Malla and dancer Teriya Phounja Magar in leading roles.

Likewise, Kaji, starring Bipin Karki and Keki Adhikari, delivered only an average box-office performance. Released on  May 22, the film earned a gross collection of Rs. 4.45 million and attracted 14,324 viewers.

Meanwhile, ‘Life Damage’ performed even more poorly at the box office. The film grossed Rs. 3.47 million and was watched by 11,371 viewers during the period. Featuring Surakshya Panta, Nimesh Shrestha and Isha Thapa, among others, the film presents a family story from a unique perspective. It was directed by Nimesh Shrestha.

‘Ek Mutthi Badal’ collected only Rs. 521,825 at the box office, with just 1,501 tickets sold. Starring Anchal Sharma, Nisha Sharma and Usha Rajak in lead roles, the film was directed by Sahara Sharma.

Similarly, Kumbh earned only Rs. 391,010, while 1,679 viewers purchased tickets to watch it. Directed by Randhir Shrestha, the film features performances by Ashok Aryan, Sunil Thapa and Sushil Pokharel, among others.
