KATHMANDU: Former Prime Minister and CPN-UML Chairman K P Sharma Oli and former Home Minister and Nepali Congress leader Ramesh Lekhak, who were arrested on Saturday on charges of suppressing the Gen-Z movement, are set to be presented before the Kathmandu District Court today.

They were not produced earlier as Saturday was a public holiday. Police confirmed that both leaders will be taken to court today.

On September 8 and 9, 2025, a total of 76 people, including three police personnel, lost their lives after the Gen-Z protests turned violent.  More than 2,400 protesters were seriously injured.

The unrest led to arson, vandalism, and looting at key state institutions, including Singha Durbar, the Parliament building, the Supreme Court, the President’s residence, police offices, commercial establishments, and private homes.

An inquiry commission led by Gauri Bahadur Karki found then Prime Minister Oli, then Home Minister Lekhak, and other officials responsible, recommending legal action. The first Cabinet meeting of the government led by Prime Minister Balendra Shah, formed on Friday (March 27) following the March 5 House of Representatives elections, decided to immediately implement the Commission’s report.

In the early hours of March 28, police detained Oli from his residence in Gundu, Bhaktapur, and Lekhak from Katunje, Bhaktapur. Following his arrest, Oli was taken to Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital for a health check-up and remains admitted on medical advice.

Lekhak is currently being held at Police Battalion No. 2, Maharajgunj. Authorities are preparing to present both leaders in court as soon as proceedings begin today.
