Maldives Police Service states the authority has seized drugs worth MVR 104 million so far into this year.
Speaking at the ‘Home Team’ press conference hosted by the Home Ministry on Sunday – Chief Superintendent of Police Ahmed Nafiz said drugs seized so for this year, will weigh 19,220 grams, which is approximately 19 kilos.
“Their street value is estimated at MVR 104,550,509,” he added.
Nafiz also shared details of counter-narcotics operations carried out by the Police in April during Sunday’s press conference. In this regard, 12 counter-narcotics operations were carried out in April that saw the following arrests:
- 70 Maldivians in possession of drugs
- Seven foreigners in possession of drugs
- Five Maldivians under the influence
- Six foreigners under the influence
A total of 56 counter-narcotics operations have been carried out this year, according to Nafiz. These operations saw the arrests of a total of 260 Maldivians and 13 foreigners in possession of drugs. Meanwhile, 61 Maldivians and 51 foreigners under the influence have been arrested so far this year.
Nafiz noted that two drug cartels were brought down during April’s operations while a total of five drug cartels have been brought down so far this year.
