Elina Svitolina made a resounding start to her Wimbledon campaign by overcoming a shaky beginning to secure a straight-sets victory over the injured five-time champion, Venus Williams. 

The Ukrainian, who reached the semi-finals in 2019, showcased her resilience and skill on Monday as she emerged triumphant with a 6-4, 6-3 win in the opening round. 

The encounter began with Svitolina losing her first service game to the seasoned American, but she quickly bounced back to level the score. Williams, displaying her renowned power and aggression, attempted to assert her dominance, but it was Svitolina who remained composed, breaking Williams again in the fifth game to claim the opening set 6-4.

In the second set, Williams faced an uphill battle after being broken in the very first game. Despite the injury setback, the 43-year-old American fought valiantly, attempting to mount a comeback. However, Svitolina's solid play and determination proved insurmountable. The former world number three capitalised on her opportunities, breaking Williams once again to secure a 4-1 lead. While Williams managed to break back and reduce the deficit to 5-3, Svitolina remained unfazed, breaking her opponent once more to clinch the set 6-3.

Following the match, Svitolina expressed her satisfaction with the victory, highlighting her ability to recover from a shaky start. She stated, "It wasn't an easy match. Venus is a great champion and always brings her best to the court. I had to stay focused and maintain my composure, especially after her strong start."

Despite the defeat, Williams showed her determination and resilience as she battled through her injury. The crowd at Centre Court gave her a standing ovation as she gracefully walked off, acknowledging their support with a wave. Reflecting on her performance, Williams commented, "I gave it my all out there, but unfortunately, it wasn't enough today. Elina played exceptionally well, and I congratulate her on the victory."

This loss marked Williams' 24th appearance at Wimbledon, a testament to her enduring presence and impact on the tournament. Svitolina's success serves as a testament to her tenacity and skill, particularly considering her recent return to the professional circuit following the birth of her baby girl.
