PARACHINAR: The death toll from ongoing clashes between two tribes in Kurram over land dispute reached 13 on Saturday when two more were killed and several others sustained injuries in various parts of the district.

Local residents said that rivals were using heavy and sophisticated weapons, including mortar shells and rocket launchers, against each other in the clashes continuing in Pewar, Tangi, Balishkhel, Khar Killay, Tari Mangal, Maqbal, Kunj Alizai, Para Chamkani Karman and other areas.

They said that mortar and rocket shells were also fired on Parachinar and Sadda, the main cities in the Kurram tribal district.

Two persons were killed while 70 others injured in the four days of clashes so far.

Clashes erupted over a land dispute between the tribes living in Boshehra and Malikhel areas of the Kurram district on Wednesday. A tribal jirga from Hangu and Orakzai districts is striving to effect a ceasefire between the two infighting tribes but failed.

Traffic on the main roads also remained suspended due to the continuing firing.

Kurram deputy commissioner Javedullah Mahsud said that the joint jirga of Hangu and Orakzai districts continued to put in efforts to de-escalate the situation and effect a ceasefire between the two tribes.

The district has witnessed bloodshed due to the result of numerous disputes over the ownership of land, water, forests and mountains that had occurred among tribes in the district, which often take a sectarian colour in Kurram.
