Anti-Corruption Bill to be taken up for debate on June 21

The new Anti-Corruption Bill is scheduled to be taken up for debate in Parliament on June 21, the Communications Department of Parliament said.

The decision has been taken at the Parliamentary Business Committee meeting held at the Parliament Complex today.

The Anti-Corruption Bill which was presented to Parliament by Minister of Justice Wijedasa Rajapakshe provides provisions for the Commission to Investigate Bribery and Corruption the powers to engage in joint investigations with foreign countries and other foreign parties.

The Supreme Court determined that certain clauses of the proposed Anti-Corruption Bill were inconsistent with the Constitution and has to be passed with a special majority in Parliament, while the situation can be avoided if the Bill is amended as advised by the judiciary.
